YES I KNOW, I MUST HAVE BEEN CRAZY TO LEAVE HAWAII
My years at the Bulletin gave me a
look at Hawaii that many will never
see or experience, like the warm
beautiful smiles on the faces of the
residents of the leper colony on the
island of Molokai to Nick the old
fisherman on Kauai who told me that
"no worry as long as fish in the sea
and the gods make the plants grow."
Hawaii's melting pot atmosphere has
had some rough edges at times, but
the Aloha Spirit seems to work it's
way in sooner or later.
It was a great experience for me and
still has a warm spot in my heart. It's
where I met my wife and we both
consider it our home.

In 1977 United Press International
approached me and offered me a job in
California as the picture bureau chief in
Sacramento, California and from there in
1981 I moved on to Washington, D.C.,
where I was offered a job by the
Associated Press to cover the White
House. Each time I pass the Father
Damien statue on Capitol Hill it reminds
me of the days on the North Shore
covering the surfing contest or doing a
story on surgar cane workers.
